A pesar de existir numerosas investigaciones sobre poblados defensivos en Navarra, paradógicamente, el Pirineo ha permanecido al margen de esta tarea, que es la que ha llevado a cabo Iñaki Sagredo. Investigación plasmada en este libro desde una perspectiva divulgativa y cercana, exponiéndola a través de imágenes aéreas, mapas históricos de enorme interés, cróquis y fotografías fruto del trabajo de campo.
Un trabajo complementario de la catalogación de los castillos navarros llevada a cabo por el autor en la colección Navarra. Castillos que defendieron el Reino.
Gran parte de estos poblados vascones son desconocidos, por lo que los datos recogidos suponen un primer paso para posteriores investigaciones. El libro recoge los correspondientes a Roncal, Salazar, Aezkoa, Urraúl, Arce, Erro, Esteribar, Donamaria-Belate, Xareta-Baztan-Bertiz Arana y Bortziriak.
